Our People
Dr Jit Cheung
Associate Director
Jit brings specialist expertise in statistical and demographic analysis, epidemiology, public health data systems, and economic evaluation, with applications across health, education, and social policy. He has particular strength in population health modelling, national data stewardship, programme evaluation, and strategy development, drawing on senior experience within New Zealand’s health and public sector institutions.
Dr Cheung has a PhD in Statistics and Demography and a Master's in Economics, and brings extensive experience in strategic research, programme development, and applied analysis across health, education, and broader social sectors. He combines a strong technical skill set—spanning statistical, actuarial, demographic, and epidemiological methods—with over 30 years in analytical and leadership roles, including senior positions within New Zealand’s health system. His work includes stewardship of national health data collections and a substantial publication record in population health and epidemiological research. While Jit has been working more closely with us on health strategy and economics topics, he has applied economics to a wider range of topics, including education and social policy, as well as his latest positions at Stats NZ and MBIE as a Statistician (Social and Industry Statistics) and economic evaluation of Covid-19 business responses.
